Soon to add to this growing number of families in high-density homes is the Leung family.
Vivian, 32, her husband Ivan, 36, their four-year-old son and four-month-old daughter, are waiting for their three-bedroom apartment to be completed in 2018.
The seven-storey apartment development Eva in Lane Cove has a childcare centre being built at ground level to cater for up to 60 children.
“The main reason why we decided to go with an apartment is because we want to live within the area,” Ms Leung said.
“House prices are rising every day, they don’t seem to stop at all – to get a house is becoming really unaffordable.”
She also wanted the convenience of an apartment, with a low-maintenance lifestyle, shorter commutes into the city for work and the ability to buy new.
Developers for Eva, Hyecorp Property Group, managing director Stephen Abolakian said the shift of families to apartments is undoubtedly happening.
“The highest proportion of new families buying our apartments would be either new families or couples about to start their family,” Mr Abolakian said.
At Eva, they reduced the number of apartments to make them large enough to be marketable to those with children – and they intend to do this down the track.
